Thank you!

*Mum and Dad hijacked the computer from me for this post*

Thank you all for the valuable advices and comments!

Spaying or having Little Reinas are indeed two seperate issues. We could have her un-spayed and not have Little Reinas.

One of the primary reasons why we are hesistant about spaying is because of the risks involved in the procedure. And also the pain that she would have to go through.

We used to have two hamsters, Kiwi and Bear Bear. Kiwi gave birth to two boys, Baby and Berrie. When the parents moved on, we were glad that we had their offsprings, two very loving brothers. And the thought of having Reina offsprings is really nice. It never crossed our mind to give her offsprings away.

We will be thinking about it carefully. Thank you again for all the advices, we really do appreciate them!

First things first, Happy Barkday to you Huskee! Mum hasn't been feeling well these couple of days, so your prezzie might just be a few days late!

I'm looking forward to the weekend! Mum and Dad just told me that they will be bringing me to Pasir Ris Farmway. I've heard about the playground there for dogs. Maybe I might just go check it out! Meanwhile, best wishes to everyone out there!

Hey Reina,
I hope your Mom is better now. Hope your parents make the best decision for you. :) I hear that most pups recover very quickly from the opawration and for my case, by the 2nd or 3rd day I was back to normal. It was a scary experience but I'm glad it's over.

Hi Reina,

Mommy's little Samantha was so tiny, the Vet didn't think she would live through a pregnacy so Mommy took away her baby maker. She did great with her surgery but Mommy was worried about it too and even took the day off & just sat at the Vet's office all day. I'm sure your your folks would too. This is a decision that has to be made by them and not any of us.

If your parents plan on keeping any babies you would have or give them to good doggie people, you could have a litter and then be spayed afterwards.

LOVE Mona, Jacks, Toby and Evander too!!

Ps.....this is Jacks speaking--I don't want any other boy messing with my girl--(((huggies))) just for you....Jacks

hi reina,

i didn't give any advice about your spaying or not. instead, i voted for it. and i voted yes to spayed. unless you are thinking to have little reinas like pa & ma said, if not, i think spaying is good.

Hi, Reina.
When I was spayed my mom was very worried for me, but at the end it wasn't bad at all. The same day of the surgery I wanted to play and jump but my mom didn't let me do that!
Your mom and dad will take the right decision for you!!
I hope you enjoy your weekend!
Have a good night

my parents are deliberating on this too. sigh! my biggest problem is, there are only a very small number of wires in singapore, and that very small number is dwindling. my wire parents, party and mango, they're kind of hoping that i can you know, carry on the family line so that they can have some grandchildren to play with, and also that our wire bloodline can be preserved. it's a lot of pressure if you ask me and honestly, i'm not so sure what's better either. perhaps you could have one batch of puppies and then get fixed?

Hiya Reina,

I'm sure your pawrents will want the best for their cutie pie. So ultimately the decision lies with them. Not just because somebody say so. I guess talking to the vet helps too.

I hope your mama gets well soon! Have fun at Pasir Ria. Are you gonna go swim swim? Take lotsa lotsa of pix ok.

Hey - my mom said to make sure you are spayed after you have puppies, if you do, because dogs are a lot more likely to get mammary cancer if they are unspayed. That would be HORRIBLE!

Hei,

it's good that you're carefully considering the spaying/puppies issue. It is a very hard call to make, but I think I want to question one idea though; "And the thought of having Reina offsprings is really nice. It never crossed our mind to give her offsprings away." Do you mean that you will sell the puppies or keep the litter? Puppies should always be sold, it's so much easier to get rid of a freebie puppy than a puppy you invested in. And it's unrealistic that you would keep an entire litter of 4-8 puppies.

But let me tell how we think about our six months old dachsie. The most important part is that he is a happy, outgoing wilderness dog with a keen nose. He will probably be used for hunting. The essential part of the hunting for him is his ability to track, so we started early practicing that and we will also participate in hunting trials, both because it's good practice for him on fairly realistic settings and because it's social for the owners (we meet likeminded people). We have no idea how good he'll turn out to be, but his pedigree is filled with hunting-champions (deer, tracking, den, drive, hare, ...) so we're hoping. If he turns out to be really good at tracking and hunting, we would probably take him to a dog show to get the exterior checked to see that he's healthy and a good representative of his breed. At a certain age his back needs to get x-ray'ed as well to ensure that he doesn't have a latent back-problem. And his eyes need checking to see that they're well. We also identify and check the personality and temper of our dogs. The above is the easy part.

The hard part, and that falls mainly to people with female dogs, who've already done the above for their dog too, is to find a match for their wonderful dachsie. To breed you need to aim for something, do you want to mix the fantastic exterior of one dachsie with the ferocious hunting-ability of a not-so-pretty dachsie, do you want to mix two den-hunters in order to get more den-hunters, do you want to mix a fine nose to a dachsie who is willing to attack a predator, in order to create an allrounder? A breeder has a goal for the puppies. We male dogs owners have it easy, we consider proposals and then we see if we agree to mixes.

And then the work really starts for people with female dogs, not only do you have to prepare for the birth, but you also need to do a LOT of work with the puppies that one never thinks of. Everything from expensive vet-visits, socialising the puppies to people of all walks of life, animals, .., registering puppies, chipping, etc. A serious breeder will be happy to explain how much work goes into puppies. And then one has to find great homes for each individual puppy whom you've grown to love. It's hard to be responsible, but that's how it should be.

So best of luck with whatever you choose, it's a really hard decision to make. And we're happy we have a male dog so we only need to do half of the above, but it's an important half too ;)

Cheers,
Stig
